Vinland Saga is a revenge anime inspired by historical people, places, and events. The series is primarily set during the Danish invasion and occupation of England in the 11th Century.

Though there are several main characters in the series, it mainly follows the life and times of Thorfinn, son of Thors. Raised in the harsh climate of Iceland, Thorfinn grows up listening to stories of conquest and discovery. But a revelation about his father leads to a tragedy that pushes him to his path of blood and of vengeance. He is forced to grow up, survive, become stronger. Eventually, he joins the very same group of mercenaries who caused the tragedy in his life with the plan of eventually killing their leader, Askeladd, in honorable combat.

In the background of this revenge narrative is a political struggle between those in power and those whose lives are caught in the middle.
