Ataru Moroboshi, of all people, is selected to compete against Lum, their leader's daughter, in a contest to determine the future of the Earth when an alien race known as the Oni suddenly appears one day. Ataru can't demonstrate any traits that would provide him an advantage, except from a major losing streak, a tumultuous relationship, and his lecherous personality. Fortunately, there is a game of tag in the competition, which Ataru wins by snatching Lum's bikini top from her.
Ataru's issues, however, are only getting started because Lum now believes that he wants to marry her owing to a misunderstanding, despite the fact that he recently got engaged to his girlfriend, Shinobu Miyake. She soon moves in with him, forcing him to deal with two demanding fiancées at once while also continuing to flirt with other women.
