The game's story is set after the events of Super Mario Land. After returning from his adventures in Sarasaland, Mario discovers that Wario has taken over his castle and has placed six golden coins around the kingdom of Mario Land which must be collected before he can enter his own castle again. To do this, Mario must traverse through four worlds filled with enemies and obstacles while collecting coins and power-ups along the way. He will also have to face off against Wario himself at the end of each world. Once all six coins are collected, Mario can then enter his castle to confront Wario one final time to reclaim it as his own.
