The Diclonius, who appear to represent the next stage in evolution, are the central characters of the tale. They are creatures with distorted skulls that resemble horns. They have tremendous telekinetic abilities that manifest as invisibility arms. They could easily wipe off humanity thanks to their abilities. Because of their fear, some Diclonius are imprisoned from birth in order to better study them. The others are instantly put to death. One of the Diclonius eventually manages to flee. Her name is Lucy, and as she flees, she plows a bloody path through the guards' lines. She suffers severe head trauma, falls into the water, and by the time she comes to, she has forgotten everything. Kouta and Yuka pick up Lucy on a beach. They now refer to her as Nyuu because she exclusively makes the "Nyuu" sound. From that point forward, the three teenagers share a home while being oblivious of the risks that will still be present for them.
