A young child named Mikado Ryuugamine yearns for the thrill of city living. He joins an Ikebukuro school on the request of his boyhood friend Masaomi Kida. Masaomi forewarns him of various people he should avoid encountering there, including the violent Dollars street gang, the enigmatic Izaya Orihara, and Shizuo Heiwajima, the toughest man in Ikebukuro. On the first day, Mikado sees the headless motorcyclist Celty Sturluson, an urban legend who instills fear in Ikebukuro's criminals. Mikado and Masaomi's ordinarily routine lives are disturbed when numerous fateful occasions and enigmatic personalities suddenly come together.
