Hajime Nagumo, a high school otaku who is harassed by his peers and without any life objectives, is called to another realm together with his class. The pupils have been called to this realm to fulfill their destiny as heroes and prevent the downfall of a nation. Gradually, they acquire special skills that are necessary for them to succeed. Only Hajime is given what appears to be a subpar power. He is a "synergist," or a straightforward craftsman. Despite being dismissed by his peers as useless, Hajime devotes himself to learning about the alien world so that he can contribute to the effort to defend the place that called him. When he and his class enter a dungeon, they stumble upon a trap that finally causes Hajime to fall into the dungeon's depths.
