Otonashi is confused at first when he awakens on the grounds of a school he is unfamiliar with. He is neither excited by the female who welcomes him or the fact that she has a gun in her hand, nor is he excited by the fact that he has no memory of his prior existence. Otonashi is told by the girl, Yuri, that he has passed on and that the schoolyard they are on is a world between life and death. She explains to him about the Shinda Sekai Sensen, a subversive group to which she and several other people from this planet are members. All of the SSS members were disobedient students who committed suicide as teenagers. Because as soon as you comply with the regulations set forth by the school, you inexplicably vanish from the intermediate realm.

However, Tenshi, the president of the student council, is a real adversary for Yuri and her pals. They are not only fighting the system; they are fighting Tenshi. She attempts to reestablish order on the school grounds with her superhuman abilities, but the SSS members are skilled in combat. Despite joining the SSS, Otonashi can't help but be intrigued by the angel, who to him seems like just another girl.
